  • Where is your country?:
I’m from Exeter, England, and go to university in Cardiff, Wales. I’m half Japanese half English, so I have family in both the UK and Japan.
  • From when to when are you studying at Meiji University?:
I started studying in September 2021 and will finish in July 2022.

Why did you decided to study abroad? Why did you decide to study at Meiji University?

I think being fully immersed into a culture and society is such an amazing way to not just learn, but to understand a language. When deciding on what degree and university I wanted to apply to, the study abroad aspect was very important. I chose a degree at Cardiff University that included a year abroad and luckily Meiji University was a partner university.

Cardiff University Business School(カーディフ大学ビジネススクール)

Studying at Meiji University was always a goal of mine as not only is it an amazing university in the center of Tokyo, but my grandfather also graduated from Meiji University in 1957 and has always mentioned how he loved and enjoyed his time there. He was also in the School of Commerce, and I feel very lucky to have been able to follow in his footsteps.

Do you have a favorite class? If so, what class? Why? Who is the professor?

Japanese 4 (Writing) / HOSOKAWA MIKI Lecture

I think my favorite class has to be Japanese writing. I get to be creative and tell funny stories while learning and applying different writing styles. Ms. Hosokawa teaches the class and I really enjoy and look forward to her writing class every week.

My Impressions of Spending Time in Japan

What thing surprised you in Japan? What kind of culture shock did you have in Japan?

I think the biggest culture shock was that you don’t hug your friends in Japan when you see them or when you’re saying goodbye!

Compared with your school life in England, what is more fun in school life in Japan?

Even though most of my lectures are online, most students in Japan live in university student accommodation. This had made it a lot easier to meet lots of new people!

Please tell us what you are proud of about England.

My hometown rugby team, Exeter Chiefs, is one of the leading clubs in the Premiership Rugby league, and the Welsh national rugby team is the most successful team in the six nations. Supporting rugby is such a great experience and I’m very proud of the UK rugby community.

What is your future dream?

I think I’d like to help bring together British and Japanese culture. I think there are lots of things each culture could learn from the other, so I’d like to try and merge them together.
