What brought you to study in Japan and motivated you to choose Meiji University?
日本への留学を志したきっかけと、明治大学を選んだ理由を教えてください。

I spent around 3 months living in Japan during a backpacking trip in 2019 and enjoyed the experience a lot. In the years that followed, I learned of the Monbukagakusho (MEXT) Scholarship and decided to apply to pursue a Masters Degree through the program.

Meiji University was the perfect fit to me, as it offers a professional degree program aimed at students who have experience in public policy and/or non-profit/non-governmental organizations. In addition, the Graduate School of Governance Studies has students from all over the world attending, which allows me to make friends and build networks with a really diverse group of people.

2019年にバックパック一つで世界を旅した時、3カ月ほどを日本で過ごし、とても楽しい経験をしました。その後、文部科学省の奨学金（国費外国人留学生制度）について知る機会があり、このプログラムを通じて日本で修士号を目指すことを決心しました。

明治大学は私にとって最も条件が合った学校でした。公共政策や非営利・非政府組織での経験がある学生を対象とした、専門職学位プログラムを提供しているからです。
さらに、ガバナンス研究科には世界中から学生が集っており、真に多様な人々と友人になりネットワークを築くことができる点も魅力です。

What do you like about Meiji University?

Where is your favorite place on the campus, and for what reason?
明治大学のキャンパスで好きな場所はどこですか？

I enjoy getting lunch at the cafeteria in the Liberty Tower at Surugadai (Ochanomizu) campus. The meals are tasty and very affordable, but in particular, the view is really incredible. Sitting down for a meal whilst surrounded by the Tokyo skyline is a very unique university experience.

駿河台（御茶ノ水）キャンパスのリバティタワーにあるカフェテリアでランチをするのが好きです。食事はおいしくとてもリーズナブルですし、何より景色が本当に素晴らしいです。東京の街並みに囲まれながら食事を取るのは、この大学ならではのとてもユニークな経験です。

What is your favorite course and why do you like it?
好きな授業を教えてください。

Some of our classes include field trips and lectures from external speakers, which are really enjoyable. The Spatial Planning held by the Graduate School of Governance Studies was particularly fun and interesting – we were able to visit the Tokyo Metropolitan Government to discuss planning, visit a new residential development, and hosted a speaker who works in city planning in New York City.

授業によってはフィールドトリップや外部講師による講義なども行われ、とても勉強になります。特にガバナンス研究科の「Spatial Planning」の一連の授業は、東京都庁で計画について議論したり、新興住宅地を見学したり、ニューヨークの都市計画に携わる方を講師に招いたり、とても楽しく興味深かったです。

My Impressions of Spending Time in Japan
日本で過ごした感想

What most surprised you about living in Japan?
日本に来て驚いたところは？

I was surprised at the amount of paperwork and bureaucracy required to complete common life activities such as registering a bank account, moving house and signing a rental contract! I even had to order a hanko (a personal stamp) to allow me to get an apartment.

銀行口座の登録、引っ越しや賃貸契約など、日常生活を送る上で必要な書類や官僚的な手続きの多さに驚かされました！アパートを借りるためにはんこ（印鑑）を注文しなければならなかったほどです。

What was the biggest challenge in your student life in Japan, compared to that in your own country?
自分の国の学生生活と比べて、日本の学生生活で大変だと感じるところは？

The low level of English proficiency in Japan surprises many people who move here, and it certainly poses a challenge occasionally. I encourage other foreign students to try as much as possible to study the language whilst here (and preferably before arriving).

日本に来る外国人の多くは、街の人々の英語力の低さに驚かされるでしょう。時に生活で苦労することもあります。他の留学生には、ここにいる間（できれば到着前に）できるだけ日本語を勉強しておくことをお勧めします。

What did you enjoy the most in your student life in Japan, compared to that in your country?
自分の国の学生生活と比べて、日本の学生生活で楽しいところは？

Studying in the huge cosmopolitan metropolis that is Tokyo, is such a different experience compared to my studies back in Australia. The amazing public transport makes exploring the city so easy, and there are always events and festivals to see.

東京のような巨大な国際都市で学ぶことは、オーストラリアで学ぶこととは大きく違います。公共交通機関が充実しているのでとても簡単に街を探索できますし、いつも何かしらイベントやフェスティバルが開催されています。

What is your dream for the future?

I hope to continue to develop my Japanese skills over the coming years and progress towards fluency.

Everybody knows about Australia’s natural beauty and unique animals, however it’s also a great place to live, work or study. The cites are very multicultural, and there is a thriving art, culture, dining and music scene.

自然の美しさや固有の動物については皆さんご存知ですが、オーストラリアは住むにも働くにも勉強をするにもとても適した場所です。街はとても多文化的で、アート・文化・食事・音楽シーンも盛んです。

What message do you have for Meiji University students?
明大生へのメッセージをお願いします。

I encourage everyone to travel abroad as much as possible! It will expand your mind and open new pathways in life.
