What brought you to Japan to study and motivated you to choose Meiji University?
日本への留学を志したきっかけと、明治大学を選んだ理由を教えてください。

My reason for choosing to go to Japan mainly revolved around my love for Japanese cars and the implied values, culture, and knowledge that came from that specific interest. Additionally, I am very passionate about business in a global sector, and upon careful consideration, I concluded that Japan was my most preferable place to build and study my foundation in business and globalization. Specifically, I decided to choose Meiji University as I took a relatively long and careful amount of time and prayers to think and sift through the options and schools that I have, which also offer courses in English to accommodate more conveniently.

In the end, as I went through the curriculum, syllabus, class listings, offerings, and testimonials in Meiji University, I came to the decision that this university will be the best fit for me and that Meiji will help me grow and maximize my potential, until I ultimately work towards reaching my goals.

日本に留学を決めた理由は、主に日本製の車への愛と、これから派生する価値観、文化、知識にありました。さらに、私はグローバル・セクターでのビジネスにとても情熱を持っていたので、ビジネスとグローバリゼーションについて学び、その基礎を固めるためには、日本が最も望ましいと考えました。さらに、英語での授業が充実している大学を調べ、とても長い時間をかけて慎重に考えた結果、明治大学を選択することにしました。

What do you like about Meiji University?
明治大学の好きなところについて

Where is your favorite place on the campus, and for what reason?
明治大学のキャンパスで好きな場所はどこですか？

My favorite place would be the outdoor field area where there are benches and tables; me and my friends can simply go there during break times and vacant periods to enjoy the weather, talk to people who are doing their daily exercises or walking their pets, we can also choose to have lunch or a snack in the outdoor area, and I enjoy the fact that we have that location as it makes the campus feel very open and airy.

私のお気に入りの場所は、中野キャンパスの広場です。広場にはベンチとテーブルがあり、友人たちと授業の空きコマの時間に良いお天気を楽しんだり、毎日のエクササイズやペットの散歩をしている人たちと話したり、ランチや軽食を取ったりすることができます。キャンパスがとても開放的で風通しが良く感じられるので、この場所をとても楽しんでいます。

What is your favorite course and why do you like it?
好きな授業を教えてください。

I love all my courses for various reasons, but if I had to choose just 1 as a favorite, I would choose “Japanese Distribution Systems.”

Besides the reason for liking this class as the subject matter aligns well with my future ambition, I like this class because we take this course 2 class periods at a time, with the first half being a lecture class and the second half being a discussion/activity class. I enjoy the intensive and focused lecture in the first class, also given the fact that our professor chooses to write on the board while she discusses, as this helps me focus on specific terminologies and follow with her lecture as she is teaching. The discussion/activity portion is also very beneficial to me as it gives us hands-on tasks in which we can put into use the things that we learned during the lecture session.

I believe that students all have different preferences in terms of better learning, and I appreciate the fact that we have a variety of class activities in this course which challenges us to think and ensure that we learn.

国際日本学部のどの授業も好きで、その理由もさまざまですが、もし好きな授業を一つだけ選ぶとしたら、「日本的流通システム論」です。

この授業が好きな理由は、授業のテーマが私の将来の目標と合致していることに加え、この授業が前半は講義形式、後半はディスカッションやアクティビティ中心の授業形式の2コマ連続の授業だからです。前半の集中的な講義はとても楽しく、また、先生が板書をしながら講義を進めるので、専門用語にも注目することができ、講義に付いて行けるようになります。ディスカッションやアクティビティでは、講義で学んだことを実践的に使うことができるので、とても勉強になります。

学生にはそれぞれ自分に適したより良い学習方法があると思います。明治大学には、さまざまなアクティビティが用意されており、私たち学生自身に考えさせて確実に学ばせてくれる環境が整っているので、とても感謝しています。

My Impressions of Spending Time in Japan

What most surprised you about living in Japan?
日本に来て驚いたところは？

I was surprised by the social/cultural difference specifically about people going about their day and everyone minding their own business. I would say this is something that I unknowingly have been deeply craving, as it helps people live their life to the fullest and how they want to, without worrying about what other people think and about judgment from outlookers. It is a very refreshing thing, the feeling of not being nervous or anxious when you go out, and not having that certain pressure put on you simply by being who you are in the outside world.

私は、特に「人々が他人について干渉をしない」という点で社会的・文化的な違いに驚きました。これは私が無意識に切望していたことで、他人の目や周囲の目を気にすることなく、自分の人生を思う存分に生きられるということです。外に出る時に緊張や不安を感じず、外の世界でありのままの自分でいることにプレッシャーを感じないという感覚は、とても新鮮でした。

What is the biggest challenge in your student life in Japan, compared to that in your own country?
自分の国の学生生活と比べて、日本の学生生活で大変だと感じるところは？

I think the biggest challenge for me is the language barrier, and I say this as someone who is not very good at learning new languages. I sometimes get jealous of people who can learn new languages very easily, some can even learn it simply by watching shows or movies.

I am already content with how things are working out for me in my student life in Japan, however I think that I would further experience more convenience, opportunities, etc. if I was knowledgeable in the language. On a positive note, I recently learned that personally, being around my friends who often speak in Japanese and talk to me in Japanese helps me learn more effectively, and I have been trying to learn more since then.

新しい言語を学ぶことがあまり得意ではない者からすると、最大の難関は言葉の壁だと思います。新しい言語をとても簡単に習得できる人や、テレビ番組や映画を見るだけで言語を習得できる人をうらやましく思うこともあります。

私は現在の日本での学生生活に満足していますが、もし語学の知識があれば、さらに生活がしやすくなったり、多くのチャンスを得たりすることができると思います。前向きな話をすると、最近、よく日本語で話したり、日本語で話しかけてくれる友人と一緒にいることで、より効果的に日本語が勉強できることに気が付きました。これ以来、もっと日本語を勉強しようと頑張っています。

What do you enjoy the most in your student life in Japan, compared to that in your country?
自分の国の学生生活と比べて、日本の学生生活で楽しいところは？

I enjoy how I meet all kinds of people from all over the world, specifically in Meiji University and in my major, we get a lot of local and international people. I like this because I get to learn different cultures, try different cuisines, learn different languages, and basically get a new perspective through meeting different people. I personally think this is valuable as it helps me grow as a person, as well as widen my knowledge and perspectives.

明治大学や私のいる国際日本学部では、世界中のさまざまな国出身の多くの人々と出会うことができるので楽しいです。異文化を学び、異国の料理を味わい、異なる言語を学び、異なる背景を持つ人たちとの出会いを通して新しい視点を得ることができるところが気に入っています。世界中の人々と出会うことで、知識や視野を広げるだけでなく、人間としても成長できると思うので、これはとても貴重な経験です。

What is your dream for the future?
将来の夢は何ですか？

I aspire to be a part of the business industry. I have been asked countless times on what specific sector of that industry I want to be a part of, but to be frank, I have a lot of things that I want to do, and this is why I can’t give a singular solid answer. On one side, I want to be involved in the automotive industry because of my love for cars, on another side I want to be involved in real estate, and on the other side I also want to be in a business focusing on event management and project planning.

I understand that these are very diverse selections that differ from each other, but I suppose the end point for me is that I want to be in an industry in which I can channel my creativity, my passion, and my interest in the corporate/business sector. I want to be able to make a living doing something that I like, while also contributing to society and helping in certain foundations to give back to the community.

私は将来ビジネス業界の一員になることを志望しています。具体的にどの業界に入りたいかと聞かれることは数え切れないほどありますが、正直なところ、かなえたいことがたくさんあるので、明確な答えがまだ出せていません。車が好きなので自動車業界に携わりたいという気持ちもありますし、不動産業界に携わりたいという気持ちもあります。また、イベント運営やプロジェクト企画を中心としたビジネスに携わりたいという思いもあります。

それぞれ異なる業界で、とても多様な選択肢があることは理解していますが、私の最終的な目標は、自分の創造性や情熱が発揮できて、企業やビジネス事業に関心を持つことができる業界に身を置くことです。自分の好きなことで生計を立てながら、社会に貢献し、地域社会にも恩返しができるような財団のお手伝いもしてみたいです。

故郷の国の紹介や、自慢をしてください。

As someone whose heart belongs to the ocean, I love the Philippines as I have access to the sea / the ocean from almost all directions. As an archipelago consisting of over 7,100 islands, we are surrounded by the ocean and beautiful sceneries. My home country has one of the best beaches I have ever seen, the bluest waters I’ve ever swam in, the smoothest waves I’ve ever surfed at. Adding the factor of the delicious cuisine and friendly people, I would say that the Philippines should definitely be in the list of people’s places to visit.

海を愛する者として、私は国全体が海で囲まれているフィリピンが大好きです。7,100以上の島々からなるフィリピンは、海と美しい景色に囲まれています。私の母国には、私がこれまで見た中で最高のビーチがあり、これまで泳いだ中で最も美しい青い海があり、これまでサーフィンした中で最も滑らかな波があります。おいしい料理とフレンドリーな人々の要素も加えると、フィリピンは間違いなく人々が訪れたい場所のリストに入っていると思います。

What message do you have for Meiji University students?
明大生へのメッセージをお願いします。

You may have heard other people say that your university and education is the preparation for life, and it may make sense and have a point as we do indeed learn a lot of things during our studies that will be beneficial in our lives. However, I choose to see this education period as part of life itself. Having this perspective continues to help me live my academic life to the fullest, while balancing it with my social, spiritual, and daily life.

I personally think that the mindset of simply seeing school days as preparatory days limits us to the full potential of living life and maximizing our every passing day. We spend 20 or more years completing our education, and that accounts to a quarter of our whole life. That being said, I think it is better to see those 20 years as not simply a phase or a passing episode; the people we meet, the lessons we learn, the challenges we face, the friends we make, the smiles we give, and the tears we shed, they are all significant parts of life. Life does not begin when we graduate, life is happening everyday, so I hope we don’t miss out on living life and maximizing what every day has to offer.

「大学とそこでの学びは人生の準備期間である」という言葉を聞いたことがあるかもしれません。実際、私たちは大学生活の中で人生に役立つ多くのことを学んでいるため、これは間違ってはいないかもしれません。しかし、私はこの教育期間を「人生の一部」と考えることにしています。このような視点を持つことで、社会的・精神的・日常的な生活とのバランスを取りながら、大学生活を精一杯送ることができると思います。

私は個人的に、大学生活を単に準備期間と捉える考え方は、過ぎ行く一日一日を最大限に活用する可能性を制限してしまうと思います。私たちは20年以上かけて教育を修了しますが、これは人生の4分の1を占めます。この中で、人との出会いや学んだこと、直面した課題、友人、笑顔、流した涙、これら全てが人生の重要な一部です。卒業した時に人生が始まるのではなく、毎日が人生の始まりですから、一日一日を大切に過ごし、そこで得られるものを最大限に生かしていってほしいです。
